Let’s be honest: airports are not naturally calming places. For a child with autism—and their caregivers—the overwhelming sounds, bright lights, and unpredictable crowds can make flying a challenging experience.

Thankfully, for families traveling through Singapore and seeking autism-friendly airport facilities in Asia, there is good news. Since October 2025, Changi Airport has provided a dedicated sensory-friendly space specifically designed for neurodivergent travelers. Known as the Calm Room, this space sets a regional benchmark for inclusive travel solutions in Asia for families with autism or sensory challenges.

What Is the Calm Room at Changi Airport? A Sensory-Friendly Space for Families with Autism

The Calm Room is a thoughtfully designed sensory-friendly airport space located in Terminal 2’s departure transit area, offering a low-stimulation environment ideal for traveling families with autism or sensory processing sensitivities.

Spanning 200 square meters, this autism-friendly facility provides a quiet and calming refuge for neurodivergent travelers and their families who need a sensory break before resuming their journeys.

Here’s a breakdown of its four distinct zones, each designed to accommodate varying sensory needs:

  • The Welcome Area
A neutral-toned entry space with a kiosk featuring a Virtual Changi Experience Ambassador (vCEA) for real-time support. Shoes and luggage can be stored here for added convenience and cleanliness.
  • The Forest
A calming open space with biophilic (nature-inspired) elements such as circular windows, gentle music, birdsong, and serene light projections.
  • The Den
A padded area equipped with soft walls, floors, and pebble-shaped cushions to provide proprioceptive and vestibular sensory support.
  • The Nest
Two private, soundproof rooms where travelers or caregivers can adjust the lighting according to personal preferences.

The diversity of sensory environments ensures that all users, whether seeking stimulation or tranquility, can find what works best for them.

Inclusive Access: Ease of Entry for Autism Families at Changi Airport

The Calm Room operates on an honor system, welcoming all neurodivergent individuals and their families without the need for medical documentation or diagnosis, reflecting Changi Airport's autism-inclusive policies.

It is open 24/7 to any traveler who benefits from a sensory-friendly environment, making it an ideal refuge for families navigating autism-related travel challenges throughout Asia.

There are no strict limits on how many companions can accompany travelers, though users are encouraged to be mindful of others during busy periods.

How Virtual Assistance Supports Families with Autism and ASD Caregivers at Changi Airport

One standout feature of the Calm Room is the Virtual Changi Experience Ambassador (vCEA). This on-demand video support tool provides assistance to caregivers without requiring them to leave the sanctuary of the Calm Room.

Support includes:

  • Real-time wayfinding assistance.
  • Detailed sensory-friendly travel maps and general airport guidance.
  • Urgent help with finding medical facilities or locating lost items.

“For families, stepping out to find help can add to their stress. This tool allows timely, personalized support while remaining within a calming space,” says Joanne Tan, Assistant Manager of Airport Operations Services at Changi Airport Group.

Autism-Inclusive Design for Neurodiversity: Insights from Experts and Families

Changi Airport collaborated with Lekker Architects, as well as experts from the Asian Women’s Welfare Association (AWWA) and the Metta Welfare Association, to create the Calm Room. During the design phase, they conducted research and interviews with families of neurodivergent individuals. As Tan explains:

Caregivers shared fears of public judgement when behaviors such as stimming or vocalizing are misunderstood. These concerns frequently discourages families from traveling together.

This feedback shaped the design into a stigma-free, judgment-free zone where families could feel supported and relaxed. By prioritizing psychological safety, the Calm Room offers a truly inclusive travel experience.

Key cleanliness protocols:

  • Shoes and footwear are removed in designated areas.
  • No food or drinks are allowed, keeping the space clean and safe for all users.
  • Restrooms, conveniently located just outside the Calm Room, are easily accessible.

User Feedback and Future Plans for Autism-Friendly Spaces at Changi Airport"

Since opening, the Calm Room has garnered significant praise from families, caregivers, and community groups across Singapore and Asia. Caregivers report that the space provides desperately needed relief and reassurance during busy travel days.

“Feedback has been positive from a wide range of users. The Calm Room has been well received as a meaningful step towards creating a more inclusive and supportive airport experience,” Tan shares.

Building on this success, Changi Airport is exploring plans to expand Calm Rooms and other sensory-friendly facilities across its terminals. Feedback from users will play a crucial role in shaping future inclusivity initiatives to advance travel accessibility for neurodivergent passengers.
