For many parents navigating their autistic child’s transition from adolescence to adulthood, the challenge of securing stable employment in Hong Kong’s competitive workforce can often feel overwhelming.  However, leading organizations in Hong Kong are demonstrating how inclusive hiring practices can create opportunities for neurodivergent young adults. Employers like Rosewood Hong Kong and Hong Kong Disneyland Resort are reshaping the narrative with structured mentorship programs, equitable pay, and sustainable career pathways.

Here’s a closer look at how these companies are leading the charge for neurodiversity.

Rosewood Hong Kong: Pioneering Careers for Autistic Young Adults in Asia

When you think of Rosewood Hong Kong’s luxurious five-star hotel environment, employment opportunities for neurodivergent youth might not come to mind immediately. However, with its innovative BluUp Upskilling Programme, Rosewood is proving that inclusion and excellence are not mutually exclusive.

In 2023, Ada Ng, Rosewood Hong Kong’s Complex Director of Impact & Sustainability, encountered LoveXpressT.E.P. café, where young autistic and SEN trainees were gaining vocational skills. This chance meeting inspired the creation of the BluUp Upskilling Programme, which officially launched in January 2024.

Building a Culture of Inclusivity for Hong Kong’s Neurodiverse Workforce

To ensure the program’s success, months of groundwork were laid, involving volunteers and employees visiting the T.E.P. café to break down misconceptions about working with autistic people. Ada explains: "The more people learned, the more they realized autistic young people weren’t nearly as difficult to work with as they had imagined."

The program integrates SEN and ASD youth across core departments and provides one-on-one mentorship for tailored guidance. Mentors receive training and support to understand sensory challenges and guide participants during mindful breaks.

Unlocking Hidden Potential in Autistic Employees at Rosewood Hong Kong

Participants like Jeffrey, who memorized over 100 restaurant tables’ locations in a single month, and Elizabeth, whose artwork is displayed prominently across the hotel, demonstrate the vast potential that autism inclusion brings.

Sylvia Wong, Rosewood’s Senior PR and Communications Manager, highlighted how hospitality SOPs cater well to many neurodivergent individuals. "Consistency is everything in hospitality,” she stated, “and many autistic employees excel at following detailed processes with accuracy. Our goal isn’t just creating jobs; it’s enabling these talents to secure competitive employment anywhere.”

To date, BluUp has trained 45 participants, with five securing full-time employment within Rosewood—all receiving equal pay and benefits.

Disneyland Hong Kong: Creating Magical Career Opportunities for Neurodivergent Talent

Hong Kong Disneyland Resort is another institution creating magical career opportunities for neurodiverse individuals through its Disney Side-by-Side Journey program. Launched in 2007, the initiative collaborates with over 40 NGOs and has created more than 450 job placements over two decades.

Tailoring Inclusive Roles for Autistic Young Adults in Hong Kong’s Workforce

Instead of placing neurodivergent individuals into predefined roles, Hong Kong Disneyland Resort matches opportunities to recruits’ strengths through pre-employment assessments. Candidates are gradually trained—responsibilities escalating step-by-step during adjustment periods. Each new hire is paired with a "buddy," a senior Cast Member trained in neurodiverse support by organizations like CareER.
